Job Description: Computer Maintenance Technician
The job of a Computer Maintenance Technician, also known as an IT Maintenance Technician or PC Technician, centers on ensuring an organization's technology infrastructure—from individual computers to network systems—operates reliably and efficiently. This role is a blend of preventative care, reactive troubleshooting, and user support, requiring a strong aptitude for both hardware and software.
Key Responsibilities
The daily tasks of this role can be broadly categorized into the following areas:
Hardware Maintenance & Repair
- Perform routine inspections, cleaning, and preventive maintenance on desktops, laptops, servers, printers, and other peripherals to prevent failures.
- Diagnose and repair hardware failures, which may involve replacing components like hard drives, RAM, or power supplies.
- Manage the inventory of IT equipment, spare parts, and consumables.
Software & System Administration
- Install, update, and patch operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux) and productivity software to ensure systems are secure and up-to-date.
- Ensure antivirus definitions, security updates, and firmware are current across all devices to mitigate vulnerabilities.
- Perform routine software maintenance tasks, such as monitoring system performance and disk space.
Network & Connectivity Support
- Assist in maintaining network equipment like routers, switches, and access points.
- Troubleshoot basic connectivity issues for Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and VPN.
- Document and label network endpoints and cabling information.
User & Helpdesk Support
- Respond to maintenance-related tickets (e.g., slow systems, printer jams) and provide technical support to end-users.
- Provide basic guidance to users to help prevent recurring issues and promote best practices.
- Log, prioritize, and resolve faults and queries, maintaining accurate records of all activities.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- A Bachelor's/College Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is often preferred, though not always required.
- An Associate's degree or equivalent work experience in computer maintenance technology is a common requirement for entry-level positions.
- Employers typically seek 1-3 years of experience in IT support, desktop support, or a similar role. Fresh graduates are also encouraged to apply for some positions.
Technical Skills
- Hardware Proficiency: Hands-on experience with PC/laptop hardware repair, upgrades, and assembly.
- Operating Systems: Familiarity with Windows and macOS environments, including installation and configuration.
- Networking: A basic understanding of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
- Diagnostic Tools: Ability to use diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, POST testers) and remote support software (e.g., TeamViewer, RDP) is a plus.
- Administration: Experience with Active Directory, Microsoft 365 administration, and patch management tools is often desired.
