Job Description: Accounting Specialist
An Accounting Specialist is a core finance professional responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting critical business processes like month-end closing and financial reporting. This role typically sits at the intersection of day-to-day transaction processing and higher-level financial analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
- General Ledger & Bookkeeping: Prepare and post journal entries, maintain organized accounting records, and assist with month-end and year-end closing activities. This includes managing accounts for fixed assets, prepaid expenses, and payroll .
- Reconciliations: Perform daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations of bank statements, credit cards, vendor accounts, and intercompany balances. Investigate and resolve any reconciling items promptly .
- Accounts Payable & Receivable: Process vendor invoices, prepare and send customer invoices, and follow up on outstanding receivables. This may also involve processing employee expense reports and ensuring timely payments .
- Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing financial statements, reports, and budgets in compliance with accounting standards (e.g., GAAP, IFRS). Provide supporting documentation and schedules for internal and external audits .
- Tax & Compliance: Ensure compliance with financial policies and regulatory requirements. This can include preparing tax filings (e.g., sales tax, withholding tax) and ensuring timely remittance of government-mandated contributions .
- Process Improvement: Identify and recommend improvements to accounting procedures and workflows to enhance efficiency and internal controls .
Typical Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is typically required. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is often preferred or considered a strong advantage .
- Experience: Employers generally seek candidates with 1 to 5 years of relevant accounting experience. Entry-level positions may consider fresh graduates, while more senior roles require a deeper background .
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, NetSuite) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (VLOOKUP, PivotTables) are essential .
- Core Competencies: Attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent organizational abilities, and effective communication skills are crucial for success in this role
