Short description of the position/project:
The Institute for Regional Development is seeking a Post-doc Researcher (i.e. PhD degree reached in the last three years) to join the Institute for its team, with a working focus on transport planning and mobility research.
The position aims to enforce our research regarding the analysis of (rural) transport accessibility and understanding or rural mobility patterns. The successful candidate will work on already acquired EU projects, will write scientific papers, and will co-develop grant proposals in close collaboration with the institute's team, as well as in cooperation with international partners.
The position is offered as a fixed-term contract of one year, with the possibility of a long-term collaboration if the fixed-term period is satisfactory, and internal funding allows long-term permanence.
Tasks:
RECCAM project: Implement the Interreg Alpine Space project RECCAM with the institute's team: boosting REadiness of rural areas for Connected, Cooperative & Automated Mobility (starting in September 2026). The institute covers the role of Lead Partner.
Other projects: Support the institute's team in the implementation of other ongoing projects (if and when needed). Such projects typically regard (rural) passenger mobility. See as example the past and ongoing projects YOUTH4MOBILITY, iMONITRAF!, RAAV, SUSTANCE.
Scientific papers: Write scientific papers for peer-reviewed journals in the fields of transportation, spatial planning, regional studies with the institute's team. Papers can elaborate project-related contents or trace new research lines interesting for the candidate and institute.
Project proposals: Elaborate new project proposals for third-party funding, either for basic or applied research with the institute's team. For instance, typical calls we work with are Interreg AS/CE, Horizon, Joint programs with FWF or DFG, DUT.
Conferences/events: Participate to scientific conferences and networking events that increase the visibility of the institute and enforce our network of partners and stakeholders at the local, national and international level.
Requirements:
PhD degree in transport-specific disciplines, with a thesis explicitly linked to the transportation field, like accessibility analysis, travel demand modelling, etc.
Work experience: At least 3 years of work experience in transportation research, with evidence of work in research projects and peer-reviewed publications.
Technical competences: Good command of transport demand models, especially activity- or agent-based modelling frameworks. Good command of GIS tools, especially of GTFS data and related public transport analyses (e.g. accessibility analyses). Good command of R or Stata as well as of programming languages such as Python.
Soft skills: Strong communication skills and ability to work in international, multidisciplinary teams with a positive and curious mindset, also open to the development of new projects at the interface between transportation and other disciplines.
Language (EN): Professional knowledge of English (C1 level) both for writing, speaking and listening. Most of work activities are performed in English.
Language (DE and IT): If Italian or German mother tongue, willingness to learn the other language (German or Italian, respectively) and achieve a B2 level within three years. If your mother tongue is another, willingness to learn either Italian or German and achieve a B2 level within three years.
A plus if you also have:
Publications: 10+ peer-reviewed publications indexed in your Scopus or Web of Science profile.
Proposals: Previous experience with the writing of basic- or applied-research project proposals.
Network: Participation in policymaking bodies or international working groups.
Language: Good command (at least B2) of German or Italian.

Gross annual salary ranging from € 44.247,32 to € 46.566,16.

Employment conditions:
Employment classification and applicable collective agreement: II level of the Italian National Collective Labour Agreement for the Tertiary/Commerce Sector.
Gross Annual Salary range: the gross annual salary range is primarily linked to the advertised position, its requirements and expected level, and is defined according to Eurac Research’s internal remuneration framework. The candidate’s highest academic degree and any relevant professional experience documented in the CV are taken into account where applicable, but always within the salary range defined for the advertised position. The range also reflects whether the position is full-time or part-time.
