The Director of Purchasing is responsible for leading the strategic and operational management of the hotel's procurement function. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role plays a critical part in ensuring the effective sourcing of goods and services, maintaining strong supplier partnerships, driving cost efficiencies and supporting the financial and operational success of Mandarin Oriental, Rome.
As Director of Purchasing, you will be responsible for the following duties:
- Lead all purchasing operations, ensuring compliance, efficiency and exceptional service delivery across the hotel.
- Develop and implement procurement strategies that support operational requirements while maximising value and cost effectiveness.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local and international suppliers and negotiate favourable commercial agreements, contracts and service levels.
- Ensure competitive sourcing processes are implemented while maintaining Mandarin Oriental quality standards and specifications.
- Monitor supplier performance, market conditions and industry trends to identify opportunities for cost savings and continuous improvement.
- Oversee inventory and stock control processes, ensuring optimal stock levels while minimising waste and loss.
- Ensure all purchasing activities are conducted in accordance with company policies, internal controls and audit requirements.
- Partner closely with Restaurants, Bars & Experience, Rooms Division, Engineering and Finance teams to support business objectives and operational needs.
- Drive the implementation and enhancement of purchasing systems, processes and controls to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Monitor procurement expenditure and performance, providing regular reporting, analysis and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Lead, motivate and develop the Purchasing team through coaching, performance management, succession planning and career development initiatives.
- Support sustainability initiatives by identifying responsible sourcing opportunities and promoting environmentally conscious purchasing practices.
- Contribute to the successful opening and ongoing operation of one of Rome's most anticipated luxury hospitality destinations.
As Director of Purchasing, we expect from you:
- A minimum of 7+ years of progressive experience in purchasing, procurement or supply chain management within luxury hospitality or a related industry.
- Proven leadership experience managing procurement operations in a complex, fast-paced environment.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen with experience in budgeting, cost control, contract negotiation and supplier management.
- Demonstrated ability to drive operational efficiencies, optimise processes and deliver measurable business results.
- Excellent negotiation, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and make informed business decisions.
- Experience working with procurement systems, inventory controls and hotel purchasing best practices.
- Proven ability to develop high-performing teams and foster a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships across all levels of the organisation.
- Strong command of written and spoken English and Italian.
- High levels of integrity, professionalism and attention to detail.
