Arup's purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment.
We are a global consultancy with extensive technical and advisory expertise. Our Civil Structures team in Milan works at the forefront of infrastructure engineering, delivering technically complex, sustainable, and resilient solutions for major rail, metro, highway, bridge, and tunnel projects across Italy and internationally. Our work directly contributes to a more sustainable and resilient future for communities worldwide.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our Civil Structures team in Milan and support major rail, metro, highway, bridge, tunnel, and transportation infrastructure projects in Italy and internationally. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of infrastructure engineering and taking technical ownership of complex, multidisciplinary commissions that directly contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for communities
As a Senior Structural Engineer at Arup, you will:
Lead and deliver structural design packages for complex infrastructure projects, taking technical ownership of allocated scope, including large underground civil structures, shafts, stations, and platforms, and working closely with project managers and technical leads to ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
Perform advanced structural and numerical analyses, producing calculations, drawings, specifications, and clear technical reports across all design stages (concept, preliminary, detailed design, IFC, and construction support), considering dynamic loads, vibration, fatigue, derailment loads, seismic actions, wind loads, and other infrastructure-specific requirements.
Develop integrated engineering solutions, collaborating with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to achieve co-ordinated, sustainable, and high-quality outcomes that account for constructability, safety, maintainability, and operational performance.
Drive digital delivery, applying and advancing BIM workflows, coordinating structural models with other disciplines, and contributing to the team's digital engineering capability.
Mentor and develop junior engineers, supporting the growth of team capability in infrastructure structural engineering and fostering a collaborative, high-performing design environment.
Does this role inspire you?
We are looking for someone who brings a combination of the following. If you don't meet every single point but believe you'd thrive in this role, we'd still love to hear from you.
Academic background and experience: Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional qualification and experience; typically 6+ years in structural design on medium to large-scale infrastructure projects, including underground structures such as shafts, cut-and-cover tunnels, earth-retaining structures, and railway or metro stations.
Software proficiency: Proficiency in structural modelling and analysis software used in infrastructure projects, such as Sofistik, GSA, or MIDAS (knowledge of Sofistik is an advantage); working knowledge of BIM tools and digital engineering workflows for modelling and drawing delivery.
Codes and standards: Experience applying local and international transportation design codes, including NTC2018, Eurocode, AASHTO, and seismic design codes.
Delivery and collaboration: You manage your workload effectively, deliver to programme and quality expectations, and contribute actively to multidisciplinary team environments, bringing sound engineering judgement and a methodical approach to complex problems.
Communication: Strong professional proficiency in Italian and English (written and spoken); confident in presenting technical work to clients and project teams.
