We are looking for a Senior Scientist to lead and develop innovative solutions for the circular economy in the steel industry, supporting the company’s strategy for sustainable products, processes and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and assess innovative process concepts for:
- by-product and slag valorization;
- integration of steelmaking by-products into downstream sectors such as cement and construction;
- reduction of CO₂ footprint;
- optimization of energy and material flows across the steel value chain.
- Contribute to EU-funded projects, including RFCS, Horizon Europe and Clean Steel Partnership, through proposal preparation, technical coordination, reporting and dissemination.
- Lead modelling and assessment activities, including Life Cycle Assessment, carbon accounting and environmental KPIs.
- Collaborate with industrial partners, research centres, universities, technology providers and other stakeholders.
- Support pilot and demonstration activities.
- Contribute to strategic roadmaps on circular economy and decarbonization in the steel sector.
- Monitor R&D and innovation trends in the area of competence.
- Promote cooperation with RTOs, universities, associations and the technical-scientific community.
What we ask for
- PhD or equivalent experience in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering or related fields.
- Experience in hard-to-abate industrial processes, by-products management, recycling value chains and circular economy technologies.
- Innovation-oriented mindset with focus on industrial deployment.
- Expertise in slag valorization, with particular focus on applications in the cement and construction sectors,
- Proven experience in EU R&D projects, preferably RFCS or Horizon Europe.
- Familiarity with LCA tools and environmental impact modelling
- Excellent communication skills, both technical and executive.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken), with the ability to operate in international environments and contribute to technical and executive-level communication
Additional experience in one or more of the following areas would be an advantage:
- Experience in metal sector processes.
- Physical chemistry applied to metallurgical processes, including thermodynamics, kinetics and transport phenomena.
- Process and flowsheet modelling, including material and energy flow analysis and process simulation.
- EU policy and regulatory frameworks, including the Green Deal and ETS.

For the position, the starting gross annual salary will be from € 45.000, with the final offer determined based on the candidate’s seniority, experience, and skills, as well as the outcome of the selection process.
