THE ROLE
You will be working in a multi-disciplinary group, where people with different backgrounds collaborate, each with their own expertise, to support IIT research activity. The Human-Robot Interfaces and Interaction (HRI²) research line is coordinated by Dr. Arash Ajoudani. We develop intelligent robots that enable natural and human-centered interaction at both cognitive and physical levels, following a socio-physical interaction paradigm.
Within this context, the EPIC project (Ergonomics of Physical and Cognitive Interaction in Collaboration) aims to redefine ergonomics by integrating human cognitive states and physical behavior using advanced sensing technologies and AI-driven analysis. The project involves the acquisition and interpretation of multimodal human data (e.g., motion, behavioral cues, wearable signals, and visual data) to assess cognitive load, attention, and ergonomic risk in real-world scenarios.
This position focuses on the implementation and application of AI methods to human-centered data, supporting the development of data-driven models and assisting in experimental activities. The role is primarily technical, with opportunities to contribute to research and innovation in a highly interdisciplinary setting.
Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:
- Supporting the collection, preprocessing, and management of multimodal human data (e.g., wearable sensors, video, motion tracking).
- Implementing and applying machine learning and AI techniques for human data analysis, including classification, regression, and pattern recognition tasks.
- Assisting in the development of pipelines for estimating cognitive states (e.g., attention, cognitive load) from behavioral and physiological signals.
- Collaborating with senior researchers to validate models and interpret results in the context of ergonomics and human–robot interaction.
- Contributing to the integration of AI modules into experimental platforms and robotic systems.
- Supporting experimental campaigns, including data acquisition, annotation, and quality assessment.
- Maintaining clear documentation of code, datasets, and experimental procedures.
- Assisting in the preparation of technical reports and project deliverables.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- A Master’s degree (MSc) in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Basic experience in machine learning and data analysis, with hands-on implementation (e.g., Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar frameworks).
- Familiarity with data preprocessing, visualization, and statistical analysis techniques.
Knowledge of handling sensor data, time-series signals, or image/video data.
- Good programming skills in Python.
- Good knowledge of the English language.
- Strong attention to detail and structured approach to data handling.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS
- E Experience with human-centered data analysis (e.g., physiological signals, motion capture, behavioral data).
- Basic understanding of human–robot interaction or cognitive ergonomics concepts.
- Familiarity with ROS, MATLAB, or data annotation tools.
- Experience with deep learning techniques for image or time-series data.
- Ability to work in a challenging and international environment.
- Capacity to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong motivation to learn, a proactive attitude, and good problem-solving skills.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
- A yearly gross salary ranging between 29 and 31K Euros, which may include a bonus option depending on your role and contract
- Private health care coverage depending on your role and contract
- Two days of teleworking per week and flexible working hours are available for certain roles
- Meal vouchers depending on your work contract
- Candidate holding a university degree who have not been resident in Italy in the last 3 years and move back to Italy to start any work activity, and meet specific requirements, can benefit from a 50% deduction on their income.
