YOUR TEAM
You will join the multi-disciplinary team of developers and designers at the iCub-Tech facility, where electronic, mechanical, and software engineers collaborate altogether.
Specifically, you will contribute to the Joint Laboratory between IIT and Camozzi Automation, a global leader in motion and fluid control components for industrial automation. The lab is currently launching a new phase focused on developing a new generation of smart electric grippers for "Adaptive Grasping".
You will work in close coordination with the Camozzi Mechatronic Application Research Center (MARC) and alongside a dedicated IIT Control/Electronic Engineer focused on modeling and sensing. Your primary goal will be to translate market requirements into engineering solutions, culminating in the development of a functional prototype for adaptive grasping in industrial and/or food handling scenarios (e.g., handling fruit or delicate packaging).
Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:
- Design and development of adaptive gripper fingers. Define kinematics and select appropriate materials to ensure adaptability to objects of varying shapes and fragility.
- Mechanical integration of advanced sensors. Collaborate with the electronic/sensing engineer to integrate Time-of-Flight (TOF), pressure, and tactile sensors directly into the mechanical structure of the fingers.
- Executive mechanical design. Create detailed 3D/2D models of the gripper body and assembly parts, ensuring readiness for manufacturing.
- Prototyping and Validation. Manage the assembly of the integrated prototype and participate in experimental validation.
- Collaboration with Industry. Interact with the Camozzi team to align the mechanical design with specific market specifications and industrial requirements.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or related fields.
- Solid understanding of mechanics, kinematics, and mechanism design.
- Proficiency in parametric mechanical design (preferably PTC Creo Parametric) and creation of technical documentation.
- Knowledge of materials selection, particularly for applications requiring delicate or adaptive handling.
- Ability to communicate technical knowledge clearly and cooperate in a mixed academic-industrial environment.
- Proficient in English, written and oral.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS
- Hands-on experience with the design and testing of robotic grippers or robotic hands.
- Experience with rapid prototyping techniques for iterative design validation.
- Understanding of sensor integration constraints (cabling, housing, miniaturization).
- Familiarity with FEA analysis software.
- Basic knowledge of robotics foundations and control to better collaborate with the modeling team.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
- Competitive salary package for international standards (Salary can include bonus option depending on your role and contract).
- Private health care coverage.
- Wide range of staff discounts.
- Up to 10 days of remote working per month.
- Flexible working hours.
