About the Role
The role is responsible for the mechanical design scope of the OHT system, with specific accountability for the correctness, consistency, and long‑term maintainability of mechanical solutions. Based in Bologna, the position operates in close coordination with suppliers, project execution teams, and other engineering disciplines to ensure that mechanical designs are technically sound and applicable in production and installation contexts.
The position acts as the reference for mechanical design decisions, covering modelling choices, interfaces, tolerances, materials, and structural concepts. Particular attention is required to ensure that mechanical solutions are compatible with industrialization needs, including manufacturability, assembly efficiency, installation constraints, and serviceability.
The role is hands‑on in nature. Responsibilities include reviewing and approving mechanical designs, supporting design changes, and defining common rules and practices to ensure consistency across internal and external design activities. No direct people management is foreseen.
Although focused on mechanics, the role requires an understanding of the overall system architecture, including electrical systems, controls, safety requirements, and operational behavior, in order to ensure correct mechanical integration and avoid downstream issues during installation and operation.
Mechanical activities are carried out in alignment with internal standards, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations, with responsibility for ensuring that mechanical documentation remains complete, coherent, and traceable over time.
Main responsibilities will include:
- Serve as design authority for the mechanical scope of the OHT system, reviewing and approving mechanical solutions and related modifications
- Own and maintain the mechanical architecture, including key interfaces, tolerances, materials, and structural principles
- Drive mechanical standardization to support efficient manufacturing, assembly, and installation, reducing unnecessary variants and ad‑hoc solutions
- Define and maintain common mechanical design rules, CAD practices, templates, and part libraries to ensure repeatability across projects and suppliers
- Review and validate mechanical models, drawings, BoMs, and technical documentation
- Coordinate and technically steer mechanical work performed by external designers or suppliers
- Support industrialization activities by ensuring that designs are suitable for production, assembly sequencing, and installation in real plant conditions
- Assess and manage the impact of mechanical design changes on cost, producibility, installation, and system integration
- Ensure correct mechanical integration with electrical systems, controls, safety components, and installation constraints
- Maintain consistency and traceability of mechanical design data throughout the product lifecycle
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying recurring mechanical issues and proposing structural design updates
What You Need to Be Successful
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Significant senior experience in mechanical design of complex industrial systems (preferably automatic machines or high‑precision equipment)
- Proven track record of hands-on mechanical design in previous roles (not only coordination)
- Experience acting as technical authority or lead mechanical engineer, guiding and validating the work of other designers
- Strong competence in structural design, tolerancing, materials manufacturability and industrialization
- Experience working with external design offices and suppliers
- Ability to translate system‑level constraints into robust mechanical solutions
- Familiarity with safety‑relevant mechanical design in industrial environments
- Structured, pragmatic mindset; ability to take technical responsibility and make decisions
- Strong ability to lead technical discussions, arbitrate system-level trade-offs, and challenge solutions when required
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken
- High availability to travel and work on customer sites
- Structured, analytical mindset with strong attention to detail
- Hands-on attitude, with the ability to combine strategic system thinking and practical problem-solving
