Data Centre Solutions Engineer - Mechanical
Role Summary
The Data Centre Solutions Engineer is a key member of STACK's Solutions Engineering team, acting as the technical bridge between our hyperscale clients and the teams responsible for developing, designing and delivering their data centre capacity.
You will translate complex client technical requirements into clear, practical engineering direction, helping shape resilient, scalable and energy-efficient cooling and mechanical solutions. Working closely with Development, Design Engineering, Delivery and Operations, you will protect the agreed design intent while ensuring solutions remain aligned with STACK standards, capabilities and long-term operational requirements. From early-stage design and Basis of Design development through construction, commissioning and operational readiness, you will influence major projects across EMEA and help deliver mission-critical infrastructure for some of the world's largest digital platforms.
Key Responsibilities
-
Act as a trusted Solutions Engineering partner to hyperscale and strategic clients, developing a clear understanding of their technical, operational and business requirements.
- Translate client’s technical requirements into clear engineering briefs, design criteria and actionable inputs for STACK's Development, Design Engineering, Delivery and Operations teams.
- Lead client and internal technical workshops, design intent sessions and engineering reviews, communicating complex topics clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Shape practical, scalable and resilient solutions that balance client requirements with STACK standards, program requirements and long-term operational performance.
- Provide mechanical engineering expertise across HVAC, chilled water, CRAH/CRAC systems, heat rejection, plantrooms, pipework, pumps, valves, containment and airflow management.
- Review cooling strategies, mechanical capacity, thermal performance and CFD analysis to support resilient, scalable and energy-efficient solutions.
- Support commissioning, performance validation and operational acceptance of mechanical and cooling infrastructure.
- Provide technical assurance throughout the project lifecycle, from early-stage design and Basis of Design development through construction, commissioning and operational readiness.
- Act as the technical authority for Mechanical Engineering while maintaining sufficient knowledge of Electrical, CSA, Controls (BMS/EPMS), Fire Protection, Security and ICT systems to effectively coordinate multidisciplinary engineering solutions.
- Understand and review engineering interfaces between building systems to identify technical risks, coordination issues and opportunities for optimisation.
- Challenge engineering proposals considering their impact on overall facility performance, constructability, operability and maintainability.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure fully integrated technical solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review design documentation, specifications, calculations, technical submissions and proposed deviations to ensuring alignment with client requirements, agreed design intent and multidisciplinary system integration.
- Identify technical risks, requirements gaps and interface issues early, providing clear recommendations and supporting engineering change control and impact assessments.
- Support project teams during design and delivery by resolving technical queries and maintaining customer requirements and technical compliance through execution.
- Coordinate effectively with consultants, contractors, vendors and internal disciplines to support integrated, buildable and operationally effective engineering solutions.
- Support testing, commissioning and handover activities, helping confirm that delivered systems meet customer expectations and agreed performance criteria.
- Prepare clear technical assessments, gap analyses, design review summaries and recommendations for customers, project teams and senior stakeholders.
- Contribute client feedback and lessons learned to the continuous improvement of STACK reference designs, engineering standards and client-focused solutions.
- Represent STACK professionally at client meetings, project sites and technical reviews across EMEA, with travel of up to 25% as required.
What You'll Bring

Strong mechanical engineering experience within hyperscale data centres, mission-critical facilities or another technically complex infrastructure environment.
- In-depth knowledge of data centre cooling and mechanical systems, including HVAC, chilled water, CRAH/CRAC, heat rejection, pumps, valves, pipework, containment and BMS interfaces.
- Ability to evaluate engineering decisions considering their impact on adjacent disciplines, operational resilience, maintainability and long-term asset performance.
- Understanding of integrated data centre systems and the interaction between mechanical, electrical and control systems throughout design, commissioning and operations.
- Experience supporting data centre design and delivery through design development, construction, commissioning and operational handover, ideally across RIBA Stages 2-5 or an equivalent project lifecycle.
- Experience reviewing Basis of Design documentation, technical specifications, design submissions, thermal modelling, CFD analysis and engineering changes.
- Good understanding of cooling resilience, redundancy, mechanical capacity, scalability, energy efficiency, PUE and operational performance.
- Experience supporting commissioning, performance validation and technical acceptance of mechanical infrastructure is highly desirable.
- Strong customer-facing and stakeholder-management skills, with the confidence to lead workshops, challenge constructively and explain complex engineering decisions clearly.
- Sound technical judgement, analytical capability and a structured approach to risk identification and problem-solving.
- Ability to collaborate across Development, Design Engineering, Delivery and Operations while maintaining clear ownership of customer technical requirements.
- Degree, HND/HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Professional accreditation or chartership is desirable.
