THE ROLE
The assignment stems from the Foundation’s need to carry out research and experimental activities on the phenomenon of art crime, as well as to develop and test technologies, digital tools, and heritage-focused ontologies designed to support prevention efforts, intelligence-led analysis, and cooperation among law-enforcement agencies..
Research Activities
As a team member, the successful candidate will primarily contribute to strengthening Cultural Heritage Technologies Research Unit expertise in the study of cultural heritage crime through interdisciplinary methodologies that integrate digital humanities, archaeological, and criminological approaches. The research unit is coordinated by Arianna Traviglia.
The selected candidate will especially focus on:
- Conducting advanced research on the illicit trafficking of cultural goods, exploring innovative technologies applicable to archaeological and criminological methodologies.
- Deepening provenance research and contributing to defining a harmonised ontology as a standard for cultural heritage description.
- Supporting the market implementation of a data-driven platform leveraging OSINT-derived datasets to support law enforcement agencies in contrasting criminal networks
- Engaging in research on ancient numismatic forgery, supporting imaging and analytical workflows for counterfeit identification.
The successful candidate will also actively contribute to the CCHT’s participation in European research projects.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- PhD in Ancient History, Archaeology, or Heritage Studies, or equivalent academic background.
- Proven experience in illicit trafficking research, provenance studies, and forgery analysis.
- Experience with OSINT methodologies, social-network analysis tools, and interoperable datasets.
- Familiarity with knowledge-graph visualisation tools (e.g., Gephi, Neo4j, or equivalent).
- Excellent command of photo and video editing software (e.g., Adobe Suite, Affinity Suite, Movavi, DaVinci Resolve, or similar) for producing research and training materials).
- Ability to properly organize, present, and report research data.
- Excellent command of English (oral and written).
ADDITIONAL SKILL
- Previous involvement in EU-funded projects and experience in proposal drafting.
- Previous collaboration with law-enforcement agencies for the protection of cultural heritage.
- Practiced software development and data analysis e.g. in Python or R, supported by formal training.
- Familiarity with Copernicus/Sentinel data and satellite-imagery interpretation
- Practical experience with digital-diagnostic technologies (RTI, micro-CT, advanced imaging) applied to cultural heritage.
- Command of other languages such as Spanish, French, and German.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
- A yearly gross salary up to 37.500 Euro
- Private health care coverage depending on your role and contract
- Candidates from abroad or Italian citizens who have carried scientific research activity permanently abroad and meet specific requirements, may be entitled to a deduction from taxable income of up to 90% from 6 to 13 years.
